Online Window Shopping for my New House
Greetings from the box realm, aka my apartment in the middle of the moving process. Soon the amount of boxes filled will overtake the amount of square footage I have to give, and we will lose access to our couch and TV. That will probably happen this afternoon.
During my breaks between boxes, I have taken to diving deep into Pinterest and dreaming about what I will do with my beautiful new house. The impatience is reaching new heights, and I am dealing with it by making an… aspirational shopping list. Some are within the budget, most solidly are not. I have been forbidden from buying new things for my house before moving in and tragically, when the floodgates open back up my wallet will have experienced financial armageddon via movers, U-Haul boxes, takeout etc.
That said, I did find one thing while poking around online that I simply could not live without— this 1968 New York Film Festival subway poster from Posteritati, one of the best stores in NYC, in my opinion. This is mostly because last time I was there the owner had his basset hound there and I got to pet her a lot. If you have a pet at your store, I will be your customer for life. Framing this giant poster will certainly bankrupt me, but that’s an issue for a different time.
Here’s what I’m online shopping for:
Lichen is a very sick homewares store in Ridgewood. I’ve never actually been there (Ridgewood is very inconvenient for me to get to) but I bought a home spray from them at a pop up a few weeks ago so maybe that counts. Anyway this sconce is very cool, a little bit industrial a little bit chrome. I like a sconce that hides the light bulb. Give me soft light!!
I don’t think there’s a place for this at my new kitchen but this is so cool I kept her on the list anyway. So convenient!
Hard to believe that after taking all my art off the walls and really taking in how much we have (too much for this apartment) I’m still looking for more. But look at this beautiful print! Those beautiful colors! The current owners of our new house have an enviable collection of graphic art so I know the house can handle it.
I do fear that this clock is a little bit too hip and trendy. I think I’ve seen pictures of this clock in a room with, you know, a big knock off Bellini sofa. But it’s so space age I can’t resist… Would look excellent in Barbarella’s fur spaceship.
Yrjo Kukkapuro Lounge Chair- Renew Finds
This girl is solidly in the “out of budget” category but I just like looking at her. Look at that goofy alien base! The sumptuous dark green leather! Apparently it’s not in great condition so having her around would probably be a bit of a nightmare.
Dusen Dusen Laundry Hamper- Coming Soon
For the first time in my adult life I will actually have reliable access to a laundry machine, so I’m enjoying fantasizing about taking my little hamper downstairs, happily separating my own whites and colors. What a dream!
I do have a question for the girlies with their ears to the ground— how are we feeling about Dusen Dusen? I love love love so many of her designs and think the whole world she’s built is really cool. But is the brand/the greater Coming Soon universe overexposed, or am I just trapped in the one little corner of the internet where that’s the case? Is this a NYC-specific problem that I will be safe from upstate? Please weigh in on this important issue in the comments.
These I actually do not really want but I think they’re so cool I had to include them anyway. Can you imagine??
This brand is really interesting- they make simple wooden furniture but they don’t finish the wood, so you can paint/finish it however you want. Their prices are also wonderful. I like this little record stand, especially because my records have been stuck in a horrible little crate for years and they deserve to be free.
This I definitely won’t buy because I don’t need her, and have actually filled 2+ medium boxes with knick knacks already. But look at that Botero-esque form!
I initially came across this blanket in my search for a suitable coverlet for my new (king size!!!!!!!!!!) bed. There are not a lot of options out there for those of us blessed with a ginormous bed (more points for ms Dusen Dusen). This one is still not big enough but look at that beautiful weave.
Hummingbird Feeder- Gardenheir
Even though I am scared of spiders, I’m really looking forward to getting to know the great outdoors. These days the sight of a pigeon on the fire escape makes everyone in my house go crazy. We are craving nature! In my new neck of the woods you’re not allowed to have a regular bird feeder in the warmer months because bears will eat bird seed like candy. But I think a hummingbird feeder is ok?
Brutalist Birdhouse- Gardenheir
Birds on the mind clearly.
Look at this wonderful little lamp. He has so much personality! I think this would look equally at home in a NASA-obsessed child’s room as a quirked up Japandi office, an that’s why it’s perfect.
Polish Movie Posters- Posteritati

While looking through the Posteritati website I noticed that Polish posters are generally way cooler than other countries. Where Germany or the U.K. are happy with a film still, the Poles make a whole beautiful new illustration. Not sure what the historical reason is for that, but I’m happy with the result. I love these posters for “Playtime” and “The Graduate".” Cuban posters were also very cool.
Gigantic French “Harold and Maude” Poster- Posteritati
This poster is almost as tall as me! And the price is more than my current rent… I think I should also cool it on movie posters since I already have my Japanese “The Sound of Music” poster which I cherish. But the design of this one is just too perfect. The type!! The collage illustration!!! My little heart can hardly take it. Probably better for everyone that she’s out of the budget right now.
