Cool Cat Diet #5
Here’s what I ate/read/watched/listened to this week:
The famous burger at Red Hook Tavern, which was very good but sadly overhyped. I knew it was over when, halfway through the burger, I took a bite of a croquette and thought “well this is much better.” I would definitely go back, it was a perfect sunny day early dinner. But I would order something else!
That same sunny day we biked to Front General Store, one of the best vintage/homewares/jewelry/miscellanea store in the city. I got a very fun play on the classic deli bag. It’s like a Baggu but a bit more refined, made from a gorgeous shiny fabric that crinkles like silk, and an embroidered design. I found out that its also made of recycled material and sewn in the US. Thrilling!
Emma Roberts’ AD home tour, which was refreshingly idiosyncratic and lived in. The vast majority of celebrity home tours are utterly lifeless and devoid of any personal taste (see: Maude Apatow’s NYC apartment tour) so I really love when we get a good one. What’s the point of being a rich celebrity if you don’t dedicate your millions to your bizarre aesthetic whims??
The discourse surrounding these new New Balance loafers, which I feel both disgusted by and allured by. They’re so horrible they loop back around to cute. Although I definitely won’t buy them, I will think of them often and when I inevitably see the coolest girl of all time wearing them at the East Broadway station, I will be full of regret for about 30 seconds.
A few episodes of the new season of Physical 100, a show I was introduced to by my ceramics classmates last year. They get the 100 most buff people in Korea and have them do crazy physical challenges. Watch it and try not to feel grateful you’re sitting peacefully on your couch! I asked Liam if he thought I could get on the show if I had a year of free time and unlimited money. He said no :(
Dinner with my family at The Fly, one of my favorite restaurants, to celebrate my sister’s birthday. They made us a divine off-menu ice box cake, which illustrates the power of sending an email, just to ask.
I rewatched “Father of the Bride,” one of the best wedding movies ever, despite its very quaint plot. I tried to imagine what would happen if my sister, at 22, had come back from study abroad with a fiancé none of us had met— pandemonium.
This article in The Nation by my favorite architecture writer. She talks about bloated American kitchens which end up being both ugly and outdated, as well as completely impractical, in their endeavor to display wealth. It made me appreciate my itty-bitty, über functional apartment kitchen.
Several lip tints from Etude House, which beauty Redditors seemed to agree will “last all day.” I’m skeptical, but feel called to try them as I feel like I look a little dead with no lip color, but deeply resent having to reapply. So far they just taste like cough syrup.
Two episodes of “Under the Bridge,” on Hulu, with Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough. We don’t get enough shows about murderous bitchy teens, especially when the teens are not played by 25 year old actors.
Delicious mini chocolate babkas, from Breads Bakery, which Liam brought to our final French class. Yes, I technically know the subjonctif now. Breads Bakery is my new Manhattan addiction, every time I’m on work island I find an excuse to go to Union Square for a cheese straw and an assortment of pastries to bring home. Chocolate babka is the top so far.
Squishy Socks from Everybody World, one of my favorite sustainable/ethical basics brands. I wear their t-shirts to the gym religiously, and ordered these socks alongside a pair of sweatpants which I ended up returning. But the socks! They’re fine on their own but when you put on your shoes they really come to life. They’re tender and cushiony on your feet and can transform even the most tired loafers into an almost orthopedic experience.
A new episode of Julia Louis-Dreyfuss’ wonderful podcast “Wiser Than Me,” in which Julia interviews Ina Garten. Every episode of this podcast is incredible (you must listen to the Jane Fonda one!!!) but Ina was especially fun. Her life has been full of fun and bold choices. Made me want to roast a chicken!
In that same vein, this Alison Roman lemony pasta, which I watched her make and made that same night. I will always try a recipe that’s essentially grown up mac and cheese. It was gooooooood.
The most incredible video of all time, found on Twitter. I can’t stop thinking about it. Very much “God I wish that were me.”
See ya next week!
