Hellooooooooo. I’ve lived in the forest for a month now and I’m never ever leaving. It has been the busiest month of my life and possibly one of the most expensive (did you know a bear-proof trash can is $600?) but it’s kind of settling down now and I have time to do things like go for an 8 mile bike ride in the morning and grill a pizza. Here is what I ate/read/watched/saw/bought in June!
A very important purchase this month was my mountain/gravel bike, which I got at Bicycle Depot in New Paltz. It’s a mauve-y pink-y purple which is fun, and it has been excellent to ride on the local rail trail.
An item I have been looking forward to for years— MY GRILL!!! I have already grilled so much this summer and I’m going to keep grilling til I die.
I saw and loved “Materialists,” and enjoyed it even more because there was this old gay couple in front of us who were laughing their asses off the whole time. I don’t get why people are in such a huff about this movie— it perfectly delivered on its promise? Spent the next 24 hours deliberating over if I should get bangs. Comment below if I should get bangs.
I got Hunter boots for stomping around my marshy backyard. If you go all the way to the back of our property there’s a little stream but you need waterproof boots to get there. Excellent for gardening.
This month our CSA started, and it has been the most wonderful addition to my life. Liam made this turnip salad that was so good. I never would have bought turnips at the regular grocery store. The best thing I made was these zucchini fritters which I paired with farmer’s market sausage and a soy dipping sauce.
Liam and I took a tennis lesson which was more fun than I think either of us were expecting. Expect me to be full Tashi Duncan by the end of the summer. And if you don’t know who Tashi Duncan is I suggest you put the phone down and educate yourself.
I saw “28 Years Later” which was great. I loved the Swedish guy so much. Genius move to have Alex Garland involved (“Warfare” and “Civil War” were amazing) and I loved that it didn’t take itself too too seriously.
I went to the Sky High Farms biennial in Germantown this weekend, which was interesting. You had to take your shoes off, which I would have liked to be warned about in advance— I was not wearing socks and generally do not trust the American public to not steal my cute shoes. There was also a bizarre video about like, a percocet pill being raptured?
I found fresh figs at our local grocery store (rare!) and made goat cheese/fig/balsamic vinegar toasts with some tarragon from my little baby herb garden. 10/10
I invested in some Merrell hiking boots and hiking poles so I can be properly stable while hiking, and they are both such upgrades, especially for a bitch like me who has twisted her ankle on a loose rock too many times.
Liam got us an ice cream machine and has been making world’s best ice cream. This week’s flavor was cannoli (cannoli shells and mini chocolate chips in a mascarpone ricotta base) which is absolutely insane.
Overall I’m skeptical about the New York Times’ “Top 100 Movies of the 21st Century” list. I thought the overall contents of the list were ok but something was lost by ranking them. Like “Superbad” at 100??? That’s way too low. But it did give me some new movies to watch— so far “Fish Tank” and “A Serious Man” which I liked a lot. “A Serious Man” is what “Beau is Afraid” was trying to be.
I’m currently reading “The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao” and loving it. Good characters. Some parts of it are particularly brutal!!
One of the first things I bought for our new house is this birdhouse, which is just the cutest thing I’ve ever seen in my life. Absolutely no clue how to mount it though. That’s for later me to figure out!
Now that I am free from my itty bitty apartment kitchen, I got an absolutely gigantic Boos Block cutting board. When it first arrived I thought I had made a mistake and ordered it too big, but it’s a total dream to cook with and makes me very happy.
I’m going swimming now! Thx 4 reading!!
I just got a Boardsmith cutting board big but not the insanely huge one (I think the boos logo on the board is ugly)
